Revisiting a Poem, “To Love and Care for Oneself”

Revisiting a Poem, “To Love and Care for Oneself”…Still relevant, still with me. I’m thankful for all the Lord gives and for the blessings he bestows and the commandments he sets upon my path. As I grow and grow my marriage and career, a steady heart and eager fitness are my checks and balances. Poem below:

To Love and Care for Oneself
By Justin Fair
Created 06/13/11, revamped 10/25/16

I’m gonna care for myself more than I’ve cared for anyone or anything.
I’m gonna commit more than I felt I could and love me for me.
This entails pushing past my defenses meant for others,
And raising my fences used against myself for others.
From this moment on, I am pushing past an excuse,
I am pushing beyond being tired,
I am breaking through my breathlessness.
So when I question my health, I will take a moment more.
So when I generalize and I fear the most, I will take a moment more.
I am taking a moment to reconsider why I am where I am.
Because I could live much worse, I could be dead, I will love life more.
I will love myself more.
Because I need to, because I want to, because I have to.
I’m gonna care for myself more than I’ve cared for anyone or anything.
I’m gonna care for myself, for myself and for no one else.
And through it all, I will hold love and forgiveness close to my heart.
So learn to care for yourself.
To benefit you.
Learn to care for yourself,
And others will care for you too.
